Gutter politics are unwelcome
and unacceptable in Ohio. Ohio is a political sleaze-free zone!
We, the undersigned, call on candidates for public office and all political parties to make the following commitment: - We will positively promote what we stand for.
- We will refrain from negative and inflammatory attack ads.
- We will describe truthfully what we will do for the people of Ohio.
- We will not distort our opponents' records and positions.
- We will exemplify transparency and responsibility in all campaign activities.
- We will denounce attacks by outside groups, and do everything possible to bring them to a halt.
- We will promote the common good by addressing issues critical to all Ohioans, including poverty, jobs, education and health care.
- We will reject the politics of polarization, which focuses on deeply divisive issues and exploits them for partisan advantage.
The 2004 and 2006 election cycles brought incivility and gutter politics to Ohio, including divisiveness, distortion, innuendo, false accusations, and character assassination. Such tactics corrupt the political process, alienate voters, exacerbate social divisions, and provide a poor example for our children. We Believe that our religious traditions inform us to speak truth in the public square – to raise our voices to seek a just society. So far in 2007, Ohio leaders have responded well to We Believe Ohio’s call for civility. In 2008, we are poised to affirm those who bring dignity and civility to the political process – and to denounce divisive and destructive rhetoric and those who employ it. By joining us, you strengthen our call for clean, instructive campaigns that promote democracy and keep the focus on the critical issues of the day and the people of Ohio. This time around, as politicians seek to be embraced by Ohio voters, let’s make sure that they embrace the best of Ohio’s values. |
